What should the Christian Response to Mass Deportation be?
Click here for the video version of this.
First of all, let’s talk about something to be careful about–emotional exploitation.
Many have seen the weeping Selena Gomez lamenting the coming deportations. Realistically, there is something very sad about deportation; actually there are several sad things about it.
One of the very sad things in our society is the way people are so easily emotionally played.
The late author Steven Covey told the story of being on public transportation when a dad got on with his young children. The dad sat quietly not noticing that his kids were running, screaming, and otherwise behaving badly in public. They were upsetting people and the dad didn’t seem to care.
Covey intervened, and told the man that his children needed to be restrained, that their behavior was very upsetting. He should get control of his kids.
The man seemed out of it, confused, and then said that Covey was right and that he was sorry. He explained that he and his children had just left the hospital where his wife and their mother had died.
Do you get the point? In the moment of the riders of that vehicle, they were emotionally upset because the kids were out-of-control.
In an instant, when those who care to hear their story of what had just happened, the kids (and the dad’s) behavior was fully understandable.
When we make judgments and condemn people based on our emotional response without seeking the truth behind the situation, we will likely make a rash and unsound judgment.
Perceived Compassion
What should the Christian response be to mass deportation?
We must, as those who find our identity in Christ and not in a political party, seek the truth of the situation.
Are these potential deportees here because one political party is compassionate and cares for them, while the other is hateful and lacks compassion?
Honestly, I do perceive that there are many kind-hearted individuals who cannot bear the thoughts of deportation. Those same people likely have a reason they think swimming the Rio Grande river in the middle of the night is an honorable and Christian thing.
But the party who violated their oaths of office and encouraged, rewarded, and accepted open borders in general are seeking one thing, and it is not the well-being of illegal immigrants.
Going at least back to the Clinton presidency, failure to enforce border security and mass illegal immigration was always followed by an attempt at blanket amnesty–right before an election. This has always been, from a political party perspective, and attempt to gain/maintain power through elections. The hope of unrestrained immigration was about the votes from those who snuck in and got free stuff–it was paying for votes, not concern for the illegals.
One famous politician noted that if we didn’t have all the illegal immigrants, who would do her landscaping and mow her yard? Was her concern for the quality of life for the oppressed? No, it was all about keeping more of her own money. You see, there is a trick to paying illegal immigrants that works well for some…
Small Town Illegal Problems
I work with a Christian Community group. We look for people who need help with just about anything, raise money and organize people, and simply slosh God’s love on them. One of the cases was a hispanic family. Their house was tiny, and one of their daughters had a significant health problem. They really needed a bigger place to live, plus a creek ran by their house and due to disrepair part of their house flooded routinely. They needed more cash.
We talked with the father, he was honest. He was here illegally. He was a very skilled carpenter. He also was a very talented operator of a Mini-ex, and multipurpose land excavation machine. With his skills, he should have been making pretty good money, after all there was a housing boom going on.
He had plenty of work, but his pay was one-third of what it should have been, and it wasn’t even minimum wage.
You see, much like many politicians, food growers, and construction companies know, when you hire someone who snuck into the country, there is no requirement to pay them even minimum wage, much less the going rates for the skills they possess. Those who hire them, as well as the illegal worker who gets hired, know that one phone call to immigration and, well…
Are the people who have let millions of people cross into our country compassionate toward the poor?
No, they are exploiting the poor.
The illegal immigrant is useful to them politically and financially.
You can pay them low wages, and keep more profit for yourself.
You can give them a few freebies (cell phones, medical care, food) and then rightfully expect them to vote for you or your party if you can get mass amnesty or have the state authorize non-citizens to vote (that has been the push lately).
And if the illegal immigrant objects, you can turn them in.
What is the Truth, Then?
What should the Christian response to deportation be, then? When considering the gritty reality that caused the current crisis,, what is the truth?
The tens of millions of people here illegally are primarily here to be exploited for the furtherance of a political party’s power. Many accept this because for their business, they can pay someone very low (illegal) wages and keep more of their money themselves.
Is this compassion?
The First Response to Deportation
What should the first Christian Response to Deportation be?
We must demand that those responsible for the exploitation of these people made in the image of God be held accountable for their crimes. There is a massive human tragedy unfolding before our eyes, and it started with money and power-greedy depraved people. People willing to cause suffering on a massive scale for their own personal benefit.
We must deal with the need for the proper vetting of new citizens. That process is already in place and was the duty of our elected officials to see that it was enforced. Those laws are for the safety and well-being of all our citizens and would-be citizens.
The United States has a foreign gang problem thanks to the political policies allowing unrestrained border crossing. Numerous women have been raped and killed by criminals who snuck into our country.
In the emotionality of this issue, we tend to miss that deportation is not even remotely the first justice issue we must deal with. We must hold accountable those who caused this injustice to begin with.
Holding those who do evil accountable is what Peter noted to be the purpose of government in 1 Pet. 2:13-16:
Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution…as sent by him (the Lord) to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.
Our own government enticing families to break the laws by promising free stuff is evil. It has been done for political power and wealth purposes, not for the good of the immigrant.
The good thing about our covenantal form of government is that those who serve at a federal level take an oath to defend the constitution against “all enemies foreign and domestic.” When public officials fail to enforce the established law, we have a legal recourse and duty to see that they meet justice.
What Living on the Border is Like…
I travel to Laredo, Texas regularly for work.
On one trip, I was getting a haircut. My stylist looked hispanic, and so I asked her if she had been born in Mexico. She shared that she had, and that her family had migrated legally to America when she was eight-years-old.
This haircut occurred during the previous Trump administration, and there was much controversy about a supposed Trump policy separating parents from their children at the border (It was actually a Clinton-era policy, which exists for a very critically moral reason, more on that in the next post).
I asked her point blank, “What do you think of the current border policy.”
She stopped cutting my hair, and quickly looked around to see who was near her, then she whispered with great intensity.
“I think we should put the Army on the border and shoot anyone who tries to sneak in. I cannot even go outside of my house safely. If I call the police, they will not come, because the illegal gangs are running the show where I live. My family came here legally, and there is a reason for the immigration policy.”
Hear what she is saying carefully, and let us make the final Christian application for this post…
The Consequences of Emotional Manipulation
What this hard-working hispanic hair stylist was suffering are the consequences of the emotional manipulation of public opinion by the political elite. The town she has lived in since she was a little girl has become a war zone. People are dying to this false compassion stemming from the false concern for the plight of illegal immigrants.
What this lady, a faithful citizen is saying, is that the exploitation of illegal immigrants hurts not only the immigrants, but the citizens of our country. There have been numerous rape/murders of women in America, the most familiar one being that of Laken Riley.
Why was she tortured and killed?
“Compassion.”
“Because Jesus would approve of this.”
Really? Can you picture Jesus approving of rape, torture, murder–and all of that for the “compassionate” purpose of achieving greater political power and wealth?
Would Christ smile and give the thumbs up to that?
In Selena Gomez’s tearful response to deportations, did she show any compassion toward the families of the American women who were raped and murdered by illegals?
No, Ms. Gomez is morally blinded by her political indoctrination. We must pray she will see truth before she causes more harm with her influence.
If we blindly support the lie of false compassion that is in actuality complicit with the exploitation of illegal immigrants, then we are accomplices to the deaths of the many women who have been raped and murdered by illegals. If we support these policies we are complicit in the deliberate exploitation of poor families given false hope of a good life in America if they will just violate the law.
There is a cost to the honest but non-thinking embrace of emotional-based lies.
Tune in next time for a biblical view of the proper punishment for those who break the law in any society.
